Although I am a personal development blogger by profession, I am in no way a mental health professional. See my disclaimer for more info.
Have you heard of something called a social battery? I’m going to teach you all about how to recharge yours so you stay energized!
Do you know what a social battery is?
Don’t worry if you don’t — it’s not exactly an official term. As an introvert, I really feel the effects of my social battery being low. And let me just say, it gets low really quickly.
With that being said, I find it extremely important to do what I can to make sure that it isn’t low all the time. In this post, I’m going to share with you some of those things that I do. And if you don’t know what the heck a social battery even is, no worries — we’ll touch on that, too!
So, are you ready? Let’s get right into it!
Whether or not you realize it, everyone has a social battery. It represents the amount of time you can socialize before you start to feel tired and want to take a break from interacting with others.
For some people (usually introverts), their social battery dies quicker than others. If you’re the life of the party, your social battery might not run out for quite a few hours.
It really isn’t even about clubbing and hanging out, though. It could be as simple as running errands. By the time you’re on your third errand, you’ll probably already be ready to go back home and relax so you don’t have to keep interacting with other humans.
No matter how introverted or extroverted you are, we all need time away from each other. We’d probably go crazy if we were around each other 24/7. In a way, the time that we spend apart helps to create a stronger sense of unity.
Things That Drain Your Social Battery:
These are things and experiences that can really drain your social battery and leave you drained:
- Being around someone you aren’t comfortable with
- Being in public too long
- Not being able to express your opinion
- Feeling like you have to initiate a conversation
- Being the center of attention
- Someone who’s talking more than listening
- You feel like you have to change your personality around someone
- You feel left out of your friend group
- Stepping out of your comfort zone
- Public speaking
- Feeling like you always have to explain yourself
Why Recharging Your Social Battery is Important:
It’s funny because I’m talking as if this is an actual physical battery that you can charge. Anyway, though, you need to recharge your social battery so you can:
- Show up healthily for others (and yourself)
- Spend quality time with yourself
- Build a healthy balance between yourself and others
- Avoid fearing social interaction
How to Recharge Your Social Battery:
1. Do something you love
One of the best ways to recharge and get back to yourself is by doing something love. This can be anything from knitting to having a jam sesh.
If you need some hobby ideas, check out this post. It’s full of all kinds of hobbies and I’m sure you’ll be able to find an activity you’ll enjoy doing when you need to recharge.
2. Know when it’s time to leave
Sometimes you’ve just got to leave when your social battery is dead. You’ll only make it worse by forcing yourself to stay in a social setting, knowing that you socially and physically can’t stand it anymore.
So, go around and say your goodbye’s, and leave!
3. Learn how to balance your energy
Learn to pace yourself. Don’t just give all your energy out in the first 30 minutes of being in a social setting. Instead, try to balance it!
4. Remember to prioritize self-care
If you don’t spend quality time with yourself, it can be hard to give energy to others. Make sure you prioritize self-care time.
