Embark on your self improvement journey with these free self care activities. Remember, you don’t have to spend money to take care of yourself!
Are you trying to embark on your self improvement journey, but don’t want to break the bank? Luckily for you, self care doesn’t have to cost a penny.
As a teen who frankly doesn’t have much of an income, I like to find different ways to treat myself. I’ve grown to learn that self care doesn’t have to mean going and paying for a $100 massage. It could be as simple as reading your favorite book.
So, here is a list of 7 fulfilling free self care activities for your next self care Sunday.
This post is all about free self care activities.
Free Self Care Activities:
1. Take a scroll in your favorite local park
The park is a great place to get a breath of fresh air and surround yourself with youthful people.
This can make you feel nostalgic and thankful for growth.
Going to a park really can bring up memories of your childhood. Connecting with your inner child is essential to practicing self care.
It’s definitely one of my favorite free self care activities!
Visit any local park — whether it’s favorite your childhood park or even a nature park.
Whatever you choose, plan to spend about 30 minutes to an hour and enjoy nature. Put on a comfortable outfit and make your way to the park!
Observe the plants, smile at the birds, and take a whiff of the fresh air.
This is so great if you don’t spend a lot of time outside (like us teenagers).
If you want, you can even listen to some music or a podcast during your walk. You don’t have to limit technology; just don’t stay on your phone all day!
That’s when you start to feel unproductive.
No matter how busy you are, it’s always worth taking a scroll in a park to reflect on your life and admire nature.
2. Chat it up with your relatives
When was the last time you had a good conversation with someone you’re close to?
I challenge you to call a family member and catch each other up on each other’s lives.
You never know what someone is going through, so a simple phone call to chat with them could mean the world to them.
Sometimes if you’re going through something, the best way to feel better is to chat with a loved one.
Even if you don’t feel like talking it out with someone else, you should try it when you’re feeling down. Who knows—you could feel loads better after a good hour-long conversation.
This is also a great opportunity to bond with your family. Especially if you don’t get the chance to spend that much time with them.
3. Indulge in a book by your favorite author
I don’t know about you, but I love when I get lost in a good, interesting book — especially by one of my favorite authors.
Reading is beneficial for several things – you can:
- improve your vocabulary by learning new words
- increase your focus
- get away from your devices
- take a break from your struggles
- spark your imagination
Nowadays, we spend almost every hour on our phones and get a scoop of other people’s lives.
But, when you read a book, you put yourself in a character’s shoes. Maybe one who’s the complete opposite of you but you still enjoy learning about.
So, if you have a copy of one of your favorite books, go grab it!
Sit in your favorite chair or sit up in your bed (I recommend using a backrest pillow) and get lost in its great imagery and details!
You’ll be so surprised at how long you end up reading.
You might even finish the book in one sitting if it’s interesting enough!

4. Practice an act of kindness
Yes, self-care involves yourself, but you also have to include others.
Doing a good deed brightens the other person’s day and can make you feel good inside.
Think about it: when someone compliments you, how do you feel?
I’d imagine you feel a sense of joy and warmth because of their encouraging words.
You can boost someone else’s mood by doing the same. And guess what? It’s free!
People seem to forget that being nice costs absolutely nothing.
Don’t be one of those people! If you like someone’s outfit or their cologne/perfume, don’t hesitate to compliment them!
When you see that they appreciate your compliment, you’ll feel happy.
5. Treat yourself to a nice, hot bubble bath
When was the last time you enjoyed a nice, warm bath (with bubbles, of course!)?
If you feel your eyebrows getting close, wondering when you last took a relaxing bath, it’s probably about that time again!
Taking a bath allows you to soak and enjoy the warm water and:
- journal
- meditate
- pray
- reflect on your day
- read a book
- eat a snack
- try a new face mask
- watch an episode of your favorite series
- talk on the phone with someone you’re close with
The fun part is adding different things to your bath to make it more aesthetic or luxurious.
There are so many things you can add to your bath like bath salts, bath bombs, or keep it simple and squirt a few squirts of your favorite bubble bath.
A nice, hot bath will always hit the spot.
6. Catch up on videos from your favorite YouTuber(s)
I absolutely love watching YouTube.
I have multiple favorite YouTubers that I watch when I eat, when I’m relaxing, or even when I’m sitting in a waiting room.
If you have some content creators that you watch often, you can spend time catching up on their recent videos as a free self care activity.
You could also use this time to discover new YouTubers you may like.
You might enjoy them so much that they become a regular YouTuber you watch.
7. Get your thoughts on paper with a daily journal
I recommend writing in a journal.
This is one of the BEST ways to reflect. It allows you to get your thoughts on paper and really visualize what kinds of things you’ve been thinking about lately.
Journaling doesn’t mean taking 30 minutes to write about how you feel.
If you’re not the type to write that long (or that much), you can answer a specific journal prompt or even consider bullet journaling.
Personally, I keep a bullet journal in my Notes app on my iPhone. Any time I think of something cool, I write it in my journal.
Don’t think that you have to go buy a fancy $20+ journal.
You can simply write in your Notes app, on a blank sheet of paper, or consider downloading my FREE daily journal here. This is what makes this free self care activity truly free!
After all, we’re trying to take care of ourselves without spending a penny, right?
Free Daily Journal
This journal is my favorite because it includes a section to mark how you’re feeling before you start writing, plus just enough lines to let all your feelings out.
Journaling is absolutely one of my favorite ways to practice emotional/mental self care, and my free daily journal can help you do just that.
